While perusing a bookstore last October, I came across the Teeny Tiny Ghost book (written by Rachel Matson and illustrated by Joey Chou) which has the cutest story. I read it and just had to get it for my son’s first Halloween. As I was reading it to him, I was inspired to create a teeny tiny ghost stuffie to go along with the book.
Skill level: Easy to intermediate
Materials:
Hook
Yarn
18 yds (17 m / 25 g) of Super Bulky /#6 weight chenille yarn such as Bernat Blanket yarn in colour White.
Notions
- 2 Black safety eyes – 9mm
- Fiber fill stuffing
- Stitch marker
- Scissors
- Darning needle
- Optional: blush & small length of black yarn
Final measurements: The finished ghost measures 3“ in both height and diameter.
Notes:
- The teeny tiny ghost pattern is a no-sew pattern worked in continuous rounds. You will start at the top of the head and work your way down at the bottom/under the ghost.
- This pattern is worked in the round, do not chain at the beginning of each round.
- I recommend using a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.
- This pattern is written in standard US crochet terms.
- Gauge isn’t all that important in this pattern, however, if you feel like your stitches aren’t tight enough, go down a hook size.
Abbreviations and special stitches:
- sc: single crochet
- sc inc: 2 sc in next st
- bobble: (yo, insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop, yo, pull through first two loops on hook) repeat 2 more times – there will be a total of 4 loops on hook – yo, pull through all 4 loops
- FLO: front loop only
- st(s): stitch(es)
- sc dec: also known as invisible decrease (insert hook in front loop of first stitch, insert hook in front loop of second stitch, yo, pull through first two loops on hook, yo, pull through two remaining loops to complete stitch
- BLO: back loop only
Pattern:
Begin working with 8mm hook.
Round 1 – sc 6 in a magic circle (6)
Round 2 – sc inc x6 (12)
Round 3 – (sc 1, sc inc) x 6 (18)
Round 4/5 – sc around (18 sts each, 36 sts total)
Round 6 – sc 6, bobble, sc 4, bobble, sc 6 (18)
Round 7/8 – sc around (18 sts each, 36 sts total)
Round 9 – sc around in FLO (18)
**Place eyes between rounds 4 and 5, approximately 2 sts apart.**
**Stuff ghost firmly but do not overstuff.**
Round 10 – (sc 1, sc dec) x 6 in BLO of round 8 (12)
Round 11 – sc dec x 6 (6)
**Cut yarn leaving a few inches, use darning needle to thread through the outside loops of the remaining 6 sts, pull tight to close. Use needle to pull yarn end up into head to finish off.**
Finishing (optional):
Smile – Using a small length of black yarn, add a smile between row 5 and 6 spanning the width of one stitch.
Cheeks – To create the cutest little cheeks use blush and dab on with a small stencil brush on row 6 approximately 2 stitches apart directly below the eyes/on either side of the mouth.
Teeny Tiny Ghost works up super quickly making it perfect to gift or sell at markets.
Choose to add the smile and/or the cheeks or simply leave them out, it looks cute either way. Have fun giving your ghost different personalities by playing with facial features.
