Ep. 11 Seasonal Stitches: What to make for each season – Drop a stitch podcast
When thinking of knitting or crocheting most people picture things like fall, winter, and everything cozy but heavy, bulky, and warm projects aren’t exactly fun to make in the spring or summer… so what seasonally appropriate things can you make when the weather warms up? Listen to find out what we lean towards!
How was your week?
Dani
- We’ve had such weird weather lately – lots of snow (like an actual snowstorm days after it’s officially spring) followed by some rain and strong winds.
- Currently feeling like she’s running late on projects but she’s working on them so it is what it is.
- Then of course last weekend was Easter. It was Isa’s first year actually “getting it” which was fun to see. They did an Easter egg hunt and assumed Luca would find most of them because he’s older but being the sweetheart he is, he shared eggs with his sister knowing she was too little to find many.
Nathalie
- Spend most of the week gathering all the necessary papers and calculating everything so I can hand off my tax file to my accountant. Tax prep for two businesses with a baby is no joke.
- We decided to start hosting Easter and had two brunches back-to-back which was a lot of work but so much fun. We’re hoping it will become a new tradition and will be “our” holiday to host. It will be especially fun next year when can do a first egg hunt for Théo.
What are you working on?
Nathalie
- Still working on my Flax Light Sweater from Tin Can Knits, using Illimani Sabri yarn in color Fawn which is a blend of 85% organic cotton and 15% baby alpaca that I actually got at the yarn crawl hosted by the Our Maker Life event in Calgary back in 2019. It’s so soft and the drape is amazing! Since it’s a lightweight sweater, I can’t wait to finish it so I can wear it this spring!
Dani
- Nothing… but she has her latest project to show us, the Riverbed blanket which will release both on her blog and as a kit available through the Lion Brand Yarn website on April 18th, 2024.
- She loved the stitch so much that she brainstormed a whole collection of items to make with the same stitch, starting with an adorable mug rug which she made in two examples so she could try out different borders (pattern for this is also coming soon).
What did you buy this week?
Nathalie
- I bought the Our Place mini home cook duo which includes one mini always pan and one mini perfect pot. We have had the normal-sized home cook duo: the everything pot and the always pan for over a year now and we love them and use them all the time except for when we need smaller ones hence why we decided to order these smaller versions. We ordered the color steam (a light beige). They have fun trendy colors, are super versatile and have held up well so it’s nice to upgrade to a full set.
Dani
- Got influenced by Toni from TL Yarn Crafts (though she wasn’t planning on influencing anyone) to buy a new keyboard. Most people think that what we do involves so much time knitting and crocheting but in truth probably 85% of the time is spent doing computer work (answering comments and emails, writing up patterns and more). This keyboard is heavy, with an early 2000s style but in a modern and nice way. It’s got it all: colorful keys, lights, perfect ASMR sound… it just makes you want to type all day!
Now let’s talk about today’s subject – Seasonal Stitches: What to make for each season
I think it’s safe to say that we all have ideas of what to knit or crochet for fall/winter right? Spring and summer are where things get complicated, and you may be short on ideas especially if you’re planning on selling at “off-season” markets. Here are some ideas for you:
Fall / winter
- All the obvious here:
- Scarves
- Hats
- Mittens
- Sweaters
- Blankets
- Garments of all kinds
Spring
- This season feels all about home what with spring cleaning on most people’s minds so of course, our crochet ideas/tendencies are in line with that. For us both, household items immediately come to mind, things like:
- Coasters or mug rugs
- Plant pot holders (plant rugs?) and/or covers
- Placemats
- Table runners
- Wall decor (think the crochet and/or knit version of macrame wall hangings)
- Dishcloths
- Baskets
- Lightweight blankets
- Rugs
- Book, iPad or e-reader covers
- This is also the perfect season to start working on gifts weather they are for Christmas, new babies, birthdays or just because.
Summer
- This season is about being out and about, enjoying the weather so of course your projects need to reflect that. We tend to go for beachy makes and practical things like:
- Beach cover ups
- Market bags
- Beach bags
- Lightweight cardigans
- Tank tops
- Crop tops
- Bucket hats
Non-winter markets
- If you’re giving spring/summer market a try, here’s a list of ideas that are quick makes and should be good sellers especially if you display them in a way that shows people how to use them:
- Pacifier clips
- Baby bow headbands
- Summer bonnets for babies (using cotton and other breathable/lightweight fibers)
- Baskets in all shapes and sizes (think small one for plant pot covers, bigger ones to corral things like baby items)
- Handbags and clutches
- Plushies or loveys

Have a great week everyone!
