Sometimes inspiration comes from the most random places. It is the case with this pattern! I spotted a striped blanket draped over the back of the couch in a random influencer’ story and immediately thought I need a Christmas colored blanket to layer over the back of my couch, which conveniently is one of the first thing you see walking into my house. 

Now the inspiration blanket was a mix of bright + dark pink and was fuzzy which is very far from my style. I obviously envisioned a knit version, as us knitters do, and pictured something a little more timeless in holiday colours. 

The mix of dark rich red and creamy white feels perfect for the holiday season while also being neutral enough to work for the rest of the year. 

Construction: The Candy Cane Throw is worked flat from the bottom up, with stripes created by alternating two colours. Each side features a beautiful, rolled edge that adds an elegant finishing touch and gives this simple beginner-friendly pattern a more intricate look than its construction suggests.

Skill level: Beginner

Materials:

Needles

32″ circular knitting needles 9,0mm (US size 13)

Notions

• Scissors
• Darning needle
• Ring stitch markers x2 (optional)

Yarn

I used 2 colours of Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick Recycled Yarn which is a Super Bulky weight (size 6) yarn. The pictures in this pattern show this yarn in the following colours:

• Main Colour (MC): Whipped Cream
• Contrast Colour (CC): Dark Cherry

Gauge: In garter stitch using 9,0mm (US size 13) needles: 4”x4” = 10 stitches across x 20 rows high.

Final measurements: Swaddle size (48”x48”)

Notes:

• Ring stitch markers are optional, but you may find it helpful to add one after the first 3 sts and before the last 3 sts to help you remember to slip the last 3 sts to create the rolled edge. 
• Cut the yarn and attach new yarn every time there is a colour change. 

Abbreviations and special stitches:

• CO: Cast on
• St(s): Stitch(es)
• K: Knit
• Sl3pwyif: Holding the yarn in front, slip three stitches from left needle onto right needle purl-wise. Doing this at the end of every row will create a rolled edge. 
• BO: Bind off

Pattern: 

Using 9.0 mm needles and MC, CO 75 sts. 

Stripe 1 – Rows 1 to 20: K until 3 sts remain, sl3wyif, turn. 

Stripe 2 – Rows 21 to 40: Using CC, k until 3 sts remain, sl3wyif, turn. 

Stripe 3 – Rows 41 to 60: Using MC, k until 3 sts remain, sl3wyif, turn. 

Stripe 4 – Rows 61 to 80: Using CC, k until 3 sts remain, sl3wyif, turn. 

Stripe 5 – Rows 81 to 100: Using MC, k until 3 sts remain, sl3wyif, turn. 

Stripe 6 – Rows 101 to 120: Using CC, k until 3 sts remain, sl3wyif, turn. 

Stripe 7 – Rows 121 to 140: Using MC, k until 3 sts remain, sl3wyif, turn. 

Stripe 8 – Rows 141 to 160: Using CC, k until 3 sts remain, sl3wyif, turn. 

Stripe 9 – Rows 161 to 180: Using MC, k until 3 sts remain, sl3wyif, turn. 

Stripe 10 – Rows 181 to 200: Using CC, k until 3 sts remain, sl3wyif, turn. 

BO, weave in ends and voilà!

Of course, my goal with this specific blanket was to have it on display over the back of my couch for the holiday season so I chose my colours accordingly, but this could be a year-round blanket. How fun would it be to match the striped to your favorite sports team colours? 

The super bulky yarn makes this blanket a quick make and gives it a wonderful weight that is so comforting and perfect for the cozy season knocking at our door. 

The rolled edge might be my favorite feature of the entire project, and the best part is that it is SO simple to do. So much so that I’m kicking myself for not trying it out sooner. It’s so simple that it’s totally beginner friendly!
