Whoever said blankets are only for cold weather surely didn’t have a baby in the summertime. As a second time mom, I’ll leave the house without a diaper bag often (if I know I won’t be gone too long) but rarely do I ever leave the house without a blanket.
It takes a few months for babies to effectively regulate their body temperatures and going from a cool 20°C house to a sweltering 40+°C heat outside to an air-conditioned car then back in the heat before going into a cold store and doing it all over again or multiples times over makes that complicated. A lightweight warm weather outfit paired with a light blanket when needed is the perfect solution for me, so it was an obvious move for me to crochet such a blanket to use daily.
Pattern Description: The Summer Breeze Baby Blanket is worked flat in rows back and forth. It features stripes of colours that are almost imperceptible due to the chosen yarn but adds great visual interest.

Yarn
I used Caron Cotton Ripple Cakes (which is a light-weight DK/size 3 yarn) in colours French vanilla (Colour A) and Summer Rain (Colour B). You will need:
- 589 yds (539 m / 288 g) of Colour A; and
- 491 yds (449 m / 240 g) of Colour B.
Using a self-stripping yarn that have some colours in common or that are similar is key to having the imperceptible stripes that give the blanket it’s look.
Note: This yarn has unfortunately been discontinued since I’ve designed this pattern. It seems like the Spiral Blend Cotton Cone Yarn from Lion Brand Yarn would be a very close match. For more yarn with similar qualities, I suggest using yarnsub.com, alternatively, any lightweight/DK (size 3) yarn with which you can meet gauge should work, but a slub cotton that is self-stripping will give the closest result.
Not ready to make this blanket just yet? Pin it so you can come back to it later!

Gauge: In pattern stitch (extended or wide double crochet) using 5,0mm (H/8) hook: 4”x4” = 13 stitches across x 10 rows high.
Final measurements: The finished blanket is a stroller/baby size, measuring 30″x40”.
If you wish to make any other size, the ad-free PDF pattern which you can purchase here features 15 other sizes from lovey to king-size.
Notes:
- The turning chain does not count as a stitch.
- For a cleaner finish use the invisible colour change.
- The entire blanket is crocheted in between stitches (this stitch is called extended or wide double crochet) which means you’ll insert your hook between stitches and below all horizontal threads connecting stitches as shown by the blue arrow here:

The Summer Breeze Blanket checks every box on the perfect summer blanket list. The drape combined with the comforting weight will quickly turn it into your favorite blanket.

Cotton is the perfect fiber for any weather but especially warmer day, it made this blanket soft, breathable and maybe most importantly moisture wicking.

As I’m writing this pattern, we are experiencing yet another multi-day heat wave here in Ottawa and my sweet baby is snuggled up with his Summer Breeze Blanket besides me and it’s making me want to make another one in throw size for myself!
