If you’ve followed me on Instagram for a little while, you know how much I love making crocheted plushies and loveys. Now that I have a son, I get to make things especially for him. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing him play with something I created. Of course, with his first Valentine’s Day around the corner, I just had to create something fun especially for him!
Pattern Description: The sweetheart lovey is a crochet amigurumi plushie in the shape of a heart that works up super quickly. He’s got a sweet little face and two legs which allow him to sit up on its own!
Skill level: Easy to intermediate
Materials:
- Super Bulky/#6 weight yarn such as Bernat Blanket yarn in 3 colours:
- Approx. 50 yards. (46m) of main colour for the heart (pictures show Bernat Blanket Brights in colour Race Car Red and Bernat Blanket yarn in colour Blush Pink);Approx. 9 yards (8m) of contrast colour 1 for the feet (pictures show Bernat Blanket yarn in colour Lead);
- Approx. 0.5 yard (0.5m) of contrast colour 2 for the smile (pictures show Bernat Blanket yarn in colour Coal).
- 8mm (L) hook
- Black safety eyes – 12mm
- Fiber fill stuffing
- Stitch markers
- Scissors
- Darning needle
Final measurements: The finished sweetheart lovey measures roughly 9“ high (feet included) by 7“ wide.
Notes:
- To make the sweetheart lovey you will begin by making each of the two cheeks of the heart separately before joining them together and working your way down to the bottom of the heart.
- The feet are worked separately and sewn on while the smile is embroidered on.
- To create different size loveys, feel free to alternate yarn weights; just be sure to adjust your hook size accordingly. For instance, if you want a bigger lovey, you could use a Jumbo (level 7) yarn such as Bernat Blanket Extra with a 10 mm (N/P) hook.
- This pattern is worked in the round, do not chain at the beginning of each round.
- I recommend using a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round and an extra stitch marker to help you count the rows of the body.
- This pattern is written in standard US crochet terms.
- Gauge isn’t all that important in this pattern, however, if you feel like your stitches aren’t tight enough, go down a hook size.

Crocheted loveys are one of my favorite items to make for kids; not only are they fun to play with but they are perfect to snuggle with and cute ones like this one double nicely as room décor!
The sweetheart lovey can be used year-round, not just for Valentine’s Day. Just imagine how sweet and thoughtful of a present it would be to give someone needing a little extra love, attention or support, no matter the day of the year or their age.
Bernat Blanket yarn is the perfect yarn for amigurumi patterns as it has great stitch definition while also being fluffy enough to ensure that the holes between the stitches are covered and no stuffing is visible or poking through. It’s available in so many colors, is soft and being a super bulky level yarn; works up quite quickly too.
